Parent Karen Royster's story

I have had four children in the Durham Public School System and have seen quite a few different schools, but the best one I have had the privilege of going to is Mangum Elementary School. The staff is the best group of people I have ever seen. They make you feel welcome from the minute you work in the door. And the reason why is the principal Gwen Johnson.

This woman pours her heart and soul into her students and their parents. But it wouldn’t be fair to leave out Janice King, this is the backbone of Mangum and also the vice-principal. When my two daughters started at Mangum they were in the fourth and first grades. They both were having problems due to the last school they attended. The staff, in my opinion, worked overtime to put my kids first and now they both are on task, if not above. Durham Public Schools has a lot to offer no matter what school my children go to; I substitute teach and all the schools have fine qualities within. It is what you make of it and parent involvement is a big part of the equation. I just wanted to praise the staff and administration at Mangum Elementary School and may they always be the best school Durham has to offer.
